The Butler Trail begins in the picturesque town of Cahir, travelling through the bustling towns of Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir, carrying onto Roscrea. The trail highlights the impact the Butler family dynasty has had on these Tipperary towns and the legacy they left behind.
Along this brilliant trail you will meet some of Ireland’s most awe-inspiring sights.

Swiss Cottage
Built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, the Swiss Cottage remains as a must-see attraction in the South East of Ireland. Explore the age-old interior of this charming cottage and enjoy a picnic on the grounds, admiring the stunning scenery.
Ancient Castles
Cahir Castle is widely known as one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle was built for the reputable Butler Family. Perfectly positioned in the heart of the town overlooking the River Suir.
The grand and glorious Ormond Castle stands in Carrick-on-Suir, Ireland’s only unfortified Tudor Manor House. While Carey’s Castle can be found in the wonderful woodlands of the Dungarvan Road, outside of Clonmel.
The Medieval Town of Clonmel
Clonmel is a town rich in heritage, surrounded by the Comeragh Mountains and Slievenamon. The town is dotted with historic landmarks including St. Patrick’s Well and the Main Guard, which was built by James Butler in 1675.

Furthermore, Clonmel is a part of the Irish Walled Towns Network and is well-known for its resistance to the infamous siege by Oliver Cromwell in 1650.
